Clean white bathroom with a bathtub and sink, both drains visible and dry

A blocked drain always picks the worst moment. We clear blocked toilets, tubs, showers, bathroom sinks, laundry drains and kitchen drains for Barrie homes, day or night. Here is how to tell what you are dealing with, what you can safely try, and what to expect when you call a licensed, insured plumber.

Fully blocked or just slow?

Water that will not move at all is a full blockage. It needs clearing, not waiting. A drain that is merely sluggish can sometimes be helped by you. The line to watch is this: if more than one fixture is acting up, the trouble is deeper than the single drain you are looking at.

A blocked toilet

Do not keep flushing. The bowl can overflow onto your floor. Use a plunger with a firm seal and steady pushes. If it still will not clear, or the water rises when you flush another fixture, stop and call us. We clear the blockage and check that nothing is stuck further down.

Tubs and shower drains

Hair and soap build up around the drain over time. A tub or shower full of standing water is a classic sign. We clear what has collected and tell you if the cause is the drain itself or something further along the line.

Bathroom sinks

Toothpaste, hair and soap residue gather where you cannot see them. Often the blockage sits just below the stopper. We clear it, and we can tell you whether the stopper or trap needs attention.

Laundry standpipes and washer drains

If your washer drain overflows or gurgles, lint is a frequent cause. A standpipe is narrow, so even a small build-up can send water onto the floor. We clear the drain and check that the washer hose sits properly.

Kitchen blockages that start at the disposal

Grease, coffee grounds and fibrous scraps from the garbage disposal can pack into the pipe below. If you have a disposal and a blocked kitchen sink, tell us. We deal with the pipe and the disposal together.

What to try before you call

A plunger is a good first step for toilets and most sinks. Remove any visible hair from a tub drain. Run hot tap water after, not boiling water on plastic pipes. Stop if water starts to rise elsewhere.

What never to pour down a drain

Grease, oils, coffee grounds, wipes labelled flushable, paper towels, cotton swabs and food scraps are the usual culprits. Harsh chemical drain cleaners can damage pipes and are a hazard when we arrive. We would rather you skip them.

Questions we get asked

Can I use a chemical drain cleaner before calling?

We advise against it. Chemical cleaners can harm older pipes and fittings, and if they fail to clear the block they leave standing water that is risky to touch. If you have already used one, tell us when you call so we can work safely.

Why does my toilet bubble when the tub drains?

Air and water are being pushed through a shared drain that is partly blocked. When the tub empties, the toilet reacts. Stop using the fixtures and call us, because the blockage may be past the toilet itself and could be a bigger problem.

Are flushable wipes really flushable?

They go down the toilet, but they do not break up like toilet paper and can catch inside the drain. Wipes are a common cause of blocked toilets. Only toilet paper belongs in the bowl. Bin the wipes, even when the packet says otherwise.

How can I stop hair from blocking my tub drain?

Fit a simple strainer over the drain and empty it after each shower. Pull out hair that collects under the stopper before it becomes a clump. This small habit prevents most tub and shower blockages. If the water still pools, call us.

My washing machine drain overflows. What causes that?

A washer drain can overflow if lint and soap residue narrow the standpipe, or if the hose sits too far down into it. Pull the machine away carefully and look. If water keeps backing up, we clear the drain and check the setup.

How do I know if the blocked drain is only in one fixture?

Run water in the other fixtures. If only one is blocked, it is probably local to that fixture. If several are slow, or a toilet gurgles when you drain something else, the blockage is deeper. Tell us what you notice and we will plan the visit around that.

Do you come out for a blocked drain at night?

Our line is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can call at night. We ask a few questions about what is blocked and whether water is spreading, so we know what to bring and how to help you.

What affects the price of clearing a blocked drain?

The type of fixture, where the blockage sits and how hard it is to reach all matter, and a simple toilet or sink is a different job from a stubborn run behind a wall. We explain the work and give you the price before we start, so there is no surprise on the day.
